Celebrating Maternity Naturally

Last week, I had the opportunity to photograph beautiful Olga, a mother-to-be, as she experiences one of the most memorable times in her life; her first pregnancy. At just over 8-months into her term, Olga is excited to welcome the birth of her baby girl into this world in just three weeks.

For this particular session, I was looking to take the natural beauty of a woman who’s ready to bring new life into the world and place her into an organic setting. Olga and I decided a local beach would be a perfect place for the photo-shoot.

“I am truly inspired by your art.”

Fan mail is a lovely thing, especially when “I am truly inspired by your art.” is the subject line. I was so pleased last week when a graphic design student named Asha Mody from the San Diego City College contacted me directly. Originally from India, Asha loved the styling of my mehndi-inspired patterned illustration.

After explaining to me that she was going to show my work to her art class, she asked for basic instruction on the steps involved in completing some of my past organic art pieces. In particular, she loved the following work, and decided to try our her own luck with the style using the techniques I had taught her. I have posted my original work first, followed by her inspired work below. Check out her graphic and web design here.

Smile as Bright as the Sunshine

As both an entrepreneur and brilliant baby photographer herself, Anne Geddes has forever been a true inspirations and mentor to me. As you will see in her work, Geddes has mastered the fine art of photographing babies unlike any idea have ever seen. Her work is simple yet dynamic and her composition is nicely balanced while the piece’s overall emotion remain strong. As an amateur in baby photography myself, I plan to continue learning from Geddes long line of gorgeous portfolio books she has published.

Recently I had the opportunity to work with a young family by documenting the life of a day in the life of their 7-month old daughter, Sophia. The child was a delight to work with and her skills in posing with a variety of expression and attitude was top notch.

All Art is Erotic

One of my favourite artists, Gustav Klimt, once said that “All Art is Erotic”. Have you ever had a photograph or two that really inspired you to test out your own abilities? A few weeks back I saw an image where an artist made different foods resemble “reproduction”. I wanted to try my own skills using an apple.

For this shot, I used a telephoto lens combined with three Kenko macro tubes. For lighting, I placed a flash behind the subject to achieve the backlit glow.

Swipe Books on Advertising & Design

Love reading about the creative industry? I do! Check out this downtown Toronto bookstore called Swipe Books on Advertising & Design. A little over one year ago, Swipe moved to 401 Richmond Street West, at Spadina, a truly landmark building in the heart of Toronto’s design district with space enough for every graphic design and advertising book worthy of shelf space and a thoughtful selection of well-designed product. Canada’s only advertising and design bookstore, Swipe Books is also the official bookstore of the RGD (Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario) and the ADCC (Advertising and Design Club of Canada).

I shot this image in the bookstore’s building on Richmond. Birds were hung off the ceiling to give the space a fresh, organic feel. The red wall and hanging lamps added to the quiet structure of the design.
