On-Location Baby Portrait Photography for Alia

I’ve been practicing various arrangements when it comes to setting up a lighting studio on-location. As I become more comfortable with different setups with various lighting options available, I am discovering many effective techniques. The following series was done at the client’s home.

A friend’s daughter, Alia, celebrated her first year old birthday this past November. Alia’s mom was looking for a series of portraits of her. For the following setup, I had one umbrella positioned on the left side of the subject, alongside an on-camera flash and bright back-lit sun.

Daddy’s Girl at 4 Days Old

A good friend of mine gave birth to a beautiful baby girl last November 2008. Within four days of her arriving into the world, I went over for an evening visit with the camera.

Alia fit into her Daddy’s hand perfectly, prompting for lots of photographs. I was limited to lighting and depended on the on-camera flash because of the sensitivity on Alia’s eyes at the time.

Baby Blue Eyes

I had a chance to photograph baby Jacob in a friend’s studio back in early 2006. Jacob was full of silly faces and was a great child to work with. I especially loved the contrast between his bright blue eyes with the dynamic red chair as a prop. At only a few months old during this shoot, Jacob was a real character in front of the camera.

Pencil Drawing Child

Back in 2001 at age 16 years old, I drew this image of a small child learning to tie her shoes laces. This was not an original photograph of my own, though a challenging image to try my skills at. During this time, I was learning the fine art of transferring a colour image into a black and white pencil drawing using various shades of pencil tone.
